I'm not sure what the Lib/Dems want to be but they will, willy nilly, become the centre right opposition if the Tories continue their rightward drift and the Lib/Dems continue to play the FPTP game as well at the next election as well they played it at the last.
By concentrating on the NHS and the water companies etc they can appeal to the ''One Nation'' Tories and not scare them off by pressing the government on higher taxes which would be likely to frighten potential and actual Tory converts.
